We learned something interesting yesterday. We had been noticing that we weren't getting very good service in any restaurant when it came time to pay the bill. We thought the staff just didn't like us, because they would bring the food then never come back with the bill. We just found out last night (from a very kind waiter) that in Europe it is considered the highest type of rudeness for a waiter to bring the bill before you ask for it. They consider that action a message that they want you out of the restaurant. If it hadn't been for his kindness we would have continued to sit and stew. He also said that in Holland (yeah they still call it Holland) they are required to take English classes every year in school starting in first grade and that at the universities most classed are taught in English. Ah the universal language--thank God!
